Overview

Hostaria Ago e Lillo offers an authentic taste of Roman cuisine right in the heart of Rome, located at Piazza del Risorgimento, just steps from the Vatican walls. This charming eatery balances tradition and comfort, providing a genuine Roman dining experience that appeals to both tourists and locals. Its setting on a lively street makes it an ideal spot for people-watching, adding to the ambiance without overpowering the meal itself.

The menu showcases classic Roman dishes with care and attention. Highlights include the Mezzemaniche Alla Gricia, a pasta dish that embodies Roman simplicity with rich flavors of guanciale and pecorino, and the Carciofo Alla Giudia, a crispy fried artichoke that is often celebrated for its unique texture and taste. Other staples such as Saltimbocca Alla Romana and Coda Alla Vaccinara reflect the city’s culinary heritage, while the Bergoglio Chicken Burger adds a contemporary twist for those seeking something familiar yet distinct.

Customers often praise the attentive and friendly staff, whose welcoming demeanor enhances the overall experience. The service is noted for its efficiency, ensuring that both food and drinks arrive promptly, which is particularly appreciated after busy sightseeing days at nearby landmarks like St. Peter's Square or the Vatican Museums. The presence of air conditioning and clean facilities also contribute to a comfortable visit.

Hostaria Ago e Lillo's atmosphere strikes a nice balance between the vibrant street energy and a cozy interior. While some find the occasional bursts of lively service, such as servers singing, to be either charming or distracting, it undeniably adds personality to the place. The restaurant suits a broad audience—from casual visitors stopping in after exploring the Vatican to those looking for an unpretentious evening meal.

The culinary offerings extend beyond the main dishes, with starters like Bruschetta Pomodoro e Mozzarella and Tagliere Misto di Salumi e Formaggi providing excellent antipasti options. Desserts such as Tiramisù and the local favorite, chocolate salami, offer sweet finishes that leave a memorable impression. A recurring note from patrons is the thoughtful touch of a small sweet treat upon the meal’s end, reinforcing the warm hospitality.

In summary, Hostaria Ago e Lillo is a dependable choice for those eager to savor Roman flavors in a friendly environment without pretense. Its prime location near major Rome attractions and a menu built on tradition and quality make it a worthy stop for anyone seeking genuine Roman fare paired with attentive service.

An ideal location with a great atmosphere on a bustling street, especially for people watching. The staff are attentive, helpful and friendly and it has a lovely clean bathroom facility (some aren't the best in Rome). This place was very close to our apartment and reasonably enough priced to call in for a couple of drinks or food. The pizzas are delicious as are the salads (they are huge too), great for snacks too after a day at the Vatican. Give them a go, you won't be dissapointed.

Good option for lunch right in between the Vatican Museum entrance/exit and St. Peter's Square (just beneath the Vatican walls). All the options you'd expect on the menu. Nice air conditioning. As you enter there's just one table visible but around the corner there's many more. Music was a bit loud and servers were singing loudly from time to time, which you might find charming or annoying depending on your taste. We tried the pesto pasta and pizza capricciosa (mozzarella, ham, olives, artichoke, and half a boiled egg), both of which were very nice and just the right portion size.

Delicious artichoke (alla giudia!) and delicious rich pasta. Attentive waitstaff, and a lovely gift at the end of the meal

Very friendly staff and fast service. We shared 2 traditional starters, the artichoke was tasty almost like chips and the three fried balls had different fillings that were all very tasty. The pasta for main course was a very generous portion and tasty too! At the end you get a little sweet surprise! We would recommend going there to our friends

Nice place for dinner. Wasn’t a fan of the baked artichoke. The pasta was fine. The chocolate salami was very good. The server didn’t write down our order, then got our order wrong but apologized and brought the right dishes shortly after.
